Blog Post: Who’s Hiring Now?

The job search process can be very hectic.  When I’m in rush-rush mode sometimes I forget to step back and think.  One question job seekers should ask themselves is, “Who’s hiring now?”  Yes, the economy is a little off center at the moment.  Let’s put some logic into this and think about a few industries/professions that might actually benefit (or at least stay steady) during a downturn in the economy. 

1.        Public Transportation – During a recessed economy people look for ways to save money.  Public transportation can often cost less than driving.  People will look to save on gas money, insurance, car payments, oil changes, new tires, etc.  This means the public transporters need more drivers, service agents and mechanics on the front lines.  With increases in business there might also be a higher need for accounting, HR and IT professionals. 

2.        Healthcare – People will always get sick and injuries will always happen.  Healthcare is a reasonably recession proof industry.  During these times look for work at hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities.  You don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse to work in these facilities.  These employers hire all types of people…accounting, HR, IT, maintenance, food service, drivers, sales and more.

3.        Government – Government services normally continue during a recession.  President Obama’s  economic recovery plan could increase the number of government employees across the country.  Look at federal, state and even local government websites now to get yourself registered or at least understand their hiring processes.

4.        Discount Stores – Discount retailers are much more likely to be hiring than specialty stores.  Once again, a lot of people are looking to save money right now.  I’m more likely to buy clothing and household items at Target or Sears than I am at Nordstrom or Superior Electronics when I’m unsure of the economy. 

What else?  Think through a few of these and I bet you’ll generate more ideas of your own.

·          Financial management, collections – unfortunate but true

·          Food – people have to eat right?

·          Education – people oftentimes get additional education/training/skills when losing employment

·          Electricity/water – public utilities stay fairly consistent despite economic conditions
